CALL IN DAY AGAINST GOVERNOR RICK SCOTT, DEMAND THAT HE SUPPORT LICENSES FOR ALL!!

When: June 4th, 2015
Time: 8:00 am – 5:00 pm
Phone # (850) 488-7146
* You can make multiple calls throughout the day!

SCRIPT:
“My name is ___________ and I’m calling from ___(City/State)____. I want Florida Governor Rick Scott to support the undocumented’s access to a driver’s license – which will help put a stop to deportations. Issue a statement now!”

SPANISH SCRIPT:
“Mi nombre es ___________ y estoy llamando desde ___ (Ciudad / Estado) ____ Quiero que el gobernador de la Florida, Rick Scott, apoye licencias de conducir para los indocumentados – lo que ayudará a poner fin a las deportaciones. Rick Scott declaré su apoyo públicamente ahora!”

Rick Scott doesn’t care about immigrants. He would rather use the immigration rights movement in Florida and the overall desperation of the community to his own benefit whenever he can. In our state the conditions for undocumented immigrants keep getting worse or staying the same, and Rick Scott as our Governor has done nothing but wait when it is convenient for him to do something half way.

Around 2010 Rick Scott made it clear where he stood on the issue of immigration. He made comments blaming immigrants for costing the state “countless billions” and taking jobs from U.S. residents. He also vetoed a bill that would allow Dreamers to get licenses.

When Rick Scott was running for governor he repeatedly said in interviews that he supports Arizona’s SB1070 and he supports Sherriff Arpiao’s enforcement of it. Rick Scott even supports the Republican idea of a standardized national ID system.

After all of this he still decided to pass In-State Tuition for undocumented students last year, when asked why he changed his position on Immigration he said that he cared more about keeping his promise to not increase tuition. This type of thinking is probably why this year’s bill to give licenses to the undocumented was proposed in a way that focuses on highway safety and not bettering the lives of working people. This is also probably why the bill failed.

The truth is that neither the Republicans nor the Democrats want what is best for the immigrant community. Both parties will oppose any bill that could threaten the money rich people have invested in profitable industries. These include construction, agricultural work, day labor and countless other areas that make millions off of exploiting the undocumented. For these people, giving the undocumented legal status even if its temporary or even if it’s just a licenses could get in the way of their profits.

This is why we need to let these politicians know that we see the truth behind their actions and lame attempts to pass reforms only when it is convenient for them. We need to let them know that what we want is meaningful reform based on what the people need and not on what will protect the investments of a few.

Action Demanding #Justice4NaplesWorkers – HUGE Success!

What fuels the Raíces en Tampa fire?
cropped-rac3adces-en-tampa2.jpg
When people who want to defend workers’ rights and also those who understand the battle of immigrants, unite with us!

In the early morning of July 16, one of Florida’s biggest workplace raids led to 160 employees being investigated, and at least 16 under arrest.

Collier County officials began investigating Fruit Dynamics, the people who worked there, and after a three-year long operation, deputies raided Fruit Dynamics. Why? Because many of these workers are undocumented. Is that it? No. They also happen to be Central American and Mexican – very specific nationalities of people who unlike many other immigrants, have extreme U.S. policies working against them. Central Americans and Mexicans are the least likely to ever have a way of obtaining legal documents to be in the U.S. and also the largest percentage of immigrants in the U.S.

So when some of the Fruit Dynamics workers reached out to Raíces en Tampa about helping them…WE DROPPED what we were doing to organize a fight for them! This is what we do, we organize for the people who are affected by the immigration system, or for those who are affected by extension.

The call began in the wee hours of 8:00 am and right away, people from the state of Arizona, Texas, California and all over Florida were calling in.

A news reporter from Naples, wanted to contact us about an interview. We called her and during the interview, she informed us the Naples secretary had lied to her telling her NO ONE had been calling in to defend the Fruit Dynamics employees! This further, fueled our fire and we made this flyer in response:

And you kept calling!

Raíces en Tampa wants to personally thank you for all of your hard work and for your support of these workers. WORKING IS NOT A CRIME. TRYING TO FEED YOUR FAMILY IS NOT A CRIME. When Collier County Sheriffs have nothing better to do than to raid hard-working people, you better believe we’ll STAND UP, FIGHT BACK!

The Fruit Dynamics workers are set to go on trial on August 11th!
We will be planning more actions leading into this and on the day of the trial.

An attack on one, is an attack on all.
Thank you.

Raíces en Tampa to Host Immigration Panel – April 2nd @USF

There was a time when all you heard from immigrants rights groups was: Let’s Pass Comprehensive Immigration Reform or CIR!
Whatever happened with CIR? Did it pass? Did it die?
Why are some people calling President Barack Obama the “Deporter In Chief”?
And then others are calling Republic Speaker Boehner the “REAL Deporter In Chief”?
What is behind each of these movements and why are we all saying different things?

There are some immigrants rights groups who exclusively organize around stopping the deportations and they go through great lengths to stop them from happening. Some include what is on our flyer, a human chain attempting to stop a deportation bus. What happened to them? Where are they now?

During this very special and important Immigration Panel, you will hear from a group of people who have
been leading the immigration movement in the country, the state of Florida and even the city of Tampa.

Some of our speakers include:
2

Professor Masao Suzuki from San Jose, California
Involved in the Civil Rights movement for immigrants right and advocate for Japanese as well as Asian Americans, Professor Suzuki has been helping pave the way for immigrants rights while tying it all in with Economics.

3
Marisol Marquez of Raíces en Tampa
Working with Raíces en Tampa, Marisol’s struggle has been a mighty push to stop deportations in Florida.
One of her goals is also fighting for Legalization for ALL undocumented immigrants.

4
Veronica Juarez of Tampa Bay Students for a Democratic Society
Tampa Bay SDS’s campaign this year was to fight for in-state tuition for all undocumented immigrants! Hear from Veronica about the updates on that bill and how the work for tuition equity was organized!

Don’t miss out on this great opportunity to learn the real reasons behind the immigration movements and
what YOU can do to: STAND UP, FIGHT BACK!
