Florida Politicians Vote Against Drivers License Bill – We Continue Fighting Back!

– Alicia Gazga

5

Raíces in Tampa has struggled the past two years for all undocumented immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses in Florida; we had meetings with members of the city council of the City of Tampa. Then got together with five of the seven members who seemed very supportive of the idea of giving licenses to the undocumented, they privately, told us they would sign our resolution showing their support. When we finally attended a City Council Meeting and put our drivers license resolution up to a vote, the City Council acted as if Raíces in Tampa did not know we were talking, typical politicians! They lied by saying they had never seen our resolution and when confronted with having them show support – they backed out. As Raíces in Tampa we understand how City Council will take to opportunism and be against the people of their own city (undocumented or not).

As recently as April 2015, City Council and Tampa City Mayor Bob Buckhorn publicly SIGNED their support in favor of DAPA (the November 2014 executive action of the President)! Time and time again, City Council members like Charlie Miranda have said that City Council cannot and would not support anything outside of the “power of City Council” – giving the excuse that a State of Florida matter was outside of their jurisdiction and even further, that licenses should be attacked through a national angle. But with the recent DAPA support they both signed, they very publicly acknowledge that they INDEED DO have the ability to sign their support in areas outside of the City of Tampa. Raíces in Tampa agrees that supporting DACA and DAPA is a great step for Tampa and Florida, but why are Bob Buckhorn and City Council remaining silent and not supportive of licenses? Their logic makes no sense and their behavior contradicts their own excuses! Raíces in Tampa demands they both do something locally, NOT give us more excuses.

In Tallahassee last week politicians voted against the SB300 bill that would give driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants in Florida, and while some say the law was for “safer roads”, Raíces in Tampa continues in the overall struggle for equality! We demand drivers licenses for all of the undocumented immigrants in Florida! The problem is not unsafe roads, we the undocumented, are not the ones who make roads unsafe! The government and politicians can not cover the sun with a finger and attempt to make us think we cannot see through their lies and excuses. Drivers licenses are a basic necessity; to go to work with our heads held high, having an ID to say ‘I am valid’, take our children to school, go to church, all without fear! We demand liberation and equality, not repression and deportations.

SB300 died this year but that does not mean Raíces in Tampa will stop fighting, we will continue pressuring the City of Tampa to support us and the undocumented, we will continue collecting signatures and seeking support from our city. We will continue pressuring Mayor Bob Buckhorn. We want legalization for all and drivers licenses in the state of Florida. Please follow us as we plan our next steps for licenses. Yes we can!

Raíces en Tampa Event! Stop the Heartbreak – Feb 14th

7

Our speaker panel will be starring Chicano and Civil Rights leader Carlos Montes of Los Angeles. California State just started issuing driver’s licenses to the undocumented!

Join Raíces en Tampa, alongside other community groups, members and allies, as we discuss how to move forward with immigration reform. Many celebrated the announcement that relief was being extended to more undocumented after millions of deportations. However, we know that we must move forward until all are protected from the pain of deportation from their loved ones.

We gather on Valentine’s Day in the spirit of love and unity to have a panel discussion on how we can join together to fight for basic rights. Speakers representing many immigrant rights organizations will discuss using the momentum the community has already built and fighting to win more.

Action Demanding #Justice4NaplesWorkers – HUGE Success!

What fuels the Raíces en Tampa fire?
cropped-rac3adces-en-tampa2.jpg
When people who want to defend workers’ rights and also those who understand the battle of immigrants, unite with us!

In the early morning of July 16, one of Florida’s biggest workplace raids led to 160 employees being investigated, and at least 16 under arrest.

Collier County officials began investigating Fruit Dynamics, the people who worked there, and after a three-year long operation, deputies raided Fruit Dynamics. Why? Because many of these workers are undocumented. Is that it? No. They also happen to be Central American and Mexican – very specific nationalities of people who unlike many other immigrants, have extreme U.S. policies working against them. Central Americans and Mexicans are the least likely to ever have a way of obtaining legal documents to be in the U.S. and also the largest percentage of immigrants in the U.S.

So when some of the Fruit Dynamics workers reached out to Raíces en Tampa about helping them…WE DROPPED what we were doing to organize a fight for them! This is what we do, we organize for the people who are affected by the immigration system, or for those who are affected by extension.

The call began in the wee hours of 8:00 am and right away, people from the state of Arizona, Texas, California and all over Florida were calling in.

A news reporter from Naples, wanted to contact us about an interview. We called her and during the interview, she informed us the Naples secretary had lied to her telling her NO ONE had been calling in to defend the Fruit Dynamics employees! This further, fueled our fire and we made this flyer in response:

And you kept calling!

Raíces en Tampa wants to personally thank you for all of your hard work and for your support of these workers. WORKING IS NOT A CRIME. TRYING TO FEED YOUR FAMILY IS NOT A CRIME. When Collier County Sheriffs have nothing better to do than to raid hard-working people, you better believe we’ll STAND UP, FIGHT BACK!

The Fruit Dynamics workers are set to go on trial on August 11th!
We will be planning more actions leading into this and on the day of the trial.

An attack on one, is an attack on all.
Thank you.

Raíces en Tampa to Host Immigration Panel – April 2nd @USF

There was a time when all you heard from immigrants rights groups was: Let’s Pass Comprehensive Immigration Reform or CIR!
Whatever happened with CIR? Did it pass? Did it die?
Why are some people calling President Barack Obama the “Deporter In Chief”?
And then others are calling Republic Speaker Boehner the “REAL Deporter In Chief”?
What is behind each of these movements and why are we all saying different things?

There are some immigrants rights groups who exclusively organize around stopping the deportations and they go through great lengths to stop them from happening. Some include what is on our flyer, a human chain attempting to stop a deportation bus. What happened to them? Where are they now?

During this very special and important Immigration Panel, you will hear from a group of people who have
been leading the immigration movement in the country, the state of Florida and even the city of Tampa.

Some of our speakers include:
2

Professor Masao Suzuki from San Jose, California
Involved in the Civil Rights movement for immigrants right and advocate for Japanese as well as Asian Americans, Professor Suzuki has been helping pave the way for immigrants rights while tying it all in with Economics.

3
Marisol Marquez of Raíces en Tampa
Working with Raíces en Tampa, Marisol’s struggle has been a mighty push to stop deportations in Florida.
One of her goals is also fighting for Legalization for ALL undocumented immigrants.

4
Veronica Juarez of Tampa Bay Students for a Democratic Society
Tampa Bay SDS’s campaign this year was to fight for in-state tuition for all undocumented immigrants! Hear from Veronica about the updates on that bill and how the work for tuition equity was organized!

Don’t miss out on this great opportunity to learn the real reasons behind the immigration movements and
what YOU can do to: STAND UP, FIGHT BACK!
